DIY SNowflake decorations

Our Youth Director Kat Corbett and family have a special craft that anyone can do with supplies they definitely have at home! Take it away, Kat!

One of my family's favorite holiday traditions is making paper snowflakes together. We hang them up one by one, and come Christmas Day, our living room has become a wonderful winter wonderland!

Supplies

  • 6 pieces of paper (we just use regular printer paper, but construction paper would work too)

  • scissors

  • tape

  • stapler

Optional:

  • string, for hanging snowflakes (we use plastic lacing, but any string or yarn will do)

  • a thick marker

Instructions

Step One

Fold paper into a triangle and cut off the top edge to make a square, as shown. Keep it folded in the triangle shape. *I like to work with all 6 papers at the same time, but you can do one by one, which is easier for smaller hands to cut through.*

Step Two

Fold your triangle in half again

Step Three

Hold your triangle by the folded edge, and make 3 cuts lengthwise like shown. Cut to about a 1/2" or so to the triangles edge. (Again, I do this with all 6 papers stacked with good scissors to make the 3 cuts just once for all of them. Cut each paper individually for easier cutting.)

Step Four

Open up your 6 pieces and flatten them out.

Step Five

Starting with the middle, tape the two strips together (I use a thick marker to help wrap that first small flap into a circle like shown.) Then turn the paper to the other side and tape the second two flaps together. And then over again, repeating until all 4 flaps are taped.

Do this for each of the 6 pieces of paper.

Step Six

Staple 3 of the flakes together, then the other 3 together, and then staple both bunches of 3 together like shown.

Step Seven

Tape the 6 middle sides of each flake together.

step 7.jpg

Step Eight

Tape string to the end of the snowflake for hanging, or without string, tape directly to wherever you'd like it to "snow".

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!
